How the North, South and West were divided politically before the Civil War.

Summary

The North, South and West were all divided politically before the Civil War. They were divided by the slave states and free states that were led by two different people. Abraham Lincoln led the Federalists or Union who were from the north and were the free states. Jefferson Davis led the Confederalists and they were represented by the south or slave states. The free states were represented by Oregon, California, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachussets, Rhode Island, Maine, and Conneticut. The slave states were represented by Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, West Virginia, Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Maryland, and Delaware.

Notes

Abraham Lincoln was known to be a "whig." This was a political party that was formed in the early years of the United States. This can be comparable with the democratic party of today. He was for modernization in banking, industry, national internal problems or situations, and railroads. Also, he supported the protective tariffs and urbanization. The reason people in the north supported Lincoln is because he supported most of the things they supported. The north wanted to end slavery and become more of a "do it yourself" kind of community. They wanted to work together to get things done and work as if we were one. Becoming a more industrialized country and more urban country can help us compete with the big time countries like the ones in Europe.

Jefferson Davis led the Confederate States of America. Jefferson led the confederalists in keeping slavery in the south. He was against almost everything that Lincoln was promoting this the north. In the Confederate States of America, Davis was allowed to serve a 6-year term for president. There were not many differences in what the president was allowed to do except for this. Though he was allowed to, he was never able to because of his flaws in office. He was unable to keep a very good military because he did everything himself. He did not let anyone do any of the military leading or military decisions. He wasted most of the south's natural resources and was unable to succeed in the war. Davis made them quite vunerable for attack and the lack of resources meant that the people will have nothing to help them fight. The Confederate states were the states that were succeeding from the Union to form a new "country" or "region."
